Cumrew
Farms owns two hardwood forests dominated by mature sugar maples
in Caledon Township. Their objective was a sustainable yield of high value
timber. Trees Unlimited marked and marketed the trees via our
Timber Harvest to 52 logging and sawmill companies. Five bids were received, the successful contractor was
chosen, a Harvest Contract was written and Trees Unlimited has
been monitoring the harvest operation since January 2001.

This is a joint project with Silv-Econ Ltd. and Gardner
Lee Environmental Engineering to prepare a Master Plan for Halton Region’s Agreement Forests.
Trees Unlimited’s role is to provide the vegetative inventories and silvicultural prescriptions for
the 1,600 acres of hardwood and softwood forests.

Walpole
Island First Nation own some of the largest lowland hardwood
forests and most of the remaining oak savanah forests in
southern Ontario. Trees Unlimited has assisted in the development of their
Forest Management Policy and the direct management of
14 woodlots, totalling 445 acres. The most recent project
includes the development of a demonstration forest.

This
large scale project included the restoration of the forest
canopy of 1.2 acres along side a wild ginseng reserve. The
project included the preparation of the restoration site, the
relocation of 6’x4’ matts of hardwood juveniles and whips
from an on-site donation area to the restoration site,
irrigation and documentation including digital stills and video.
The project was inspected and approved by the Ontario Ministry
of Natural Resources.

Trees
Unlimited designed and implemented the Niagara Peninsula’s
Woodland and Fragile Land Restoration Project as part of OPG’s
Carbon Sequestration Program. The largest project in Ontario,
totalling 83,645 seedlings on 93 acres, will expand forest cover,
increase forest interior, establish riparian buffers along the
Welland River and provide landowner education and recognition.

In
1999 and 2000, Trees Unlimited in partnership with the Pyetts
successfully established 19,145 on 50 acres of infertile, harsh
Welland clay soils acres. The planting was part of a
wetland/forest ecosystem restoration on abandoned farm land.

Starr Island is a 107 acre island located at the southern end of
Georgian Bay. Starr Island has been in the Skoggard family for
three generations. The ownership of the heritage island was in
jeopardy due to excessive property taxes. Trees Unlimited and
the family prepared a Managed Forest Plan under MFTIP and
successfully argued their case to the Assessment Review Board.
We were success in reducing the property taxes by 90%.

Trees Unlimited
reviewed and approved a Managed Forest Plan prepared by the
Alakas family for their lovely forested property in the Niagara
Region.

The world renown
raptor rehabilitation facility owned by the Kay and Larry
McKeever, Jan Sharkey Thomas and Robert Bateman contains a
Carolinian forest along the Jordan Valley as well as a mature
arboretum. Trees Unlimited prepared the Managed Forest Plan and
successfully reduced their property taxes by 60%.

Walker Industries
wanted to incorporate their forested lands with their other
land-use activities. Trees Unlimited was retained to develop and
deliver a 20 year forest management plan for their 550 forested
acres. Activities have included 5 forests in MFTIP, a 29 acre
functioning sugar bush with spring tours, 45 acres of woodland
restoration through plantings and more. Walker Industries has
become a supporting partner of the Niagara Woodlot Association.

Enbridge Consumers
Gas purchased a privately owned property that was managed by
Trees Unlimited. This led to the review and implementation of a
forest management strategy for many of their forested and
non-forested properties from Niagara Region to Lambton County.
Sustainable harvesting to Carolinian forest restoration are
activities undertaken to date.

The NPC owns some of the oldest and most significant forested
lands in Niagara and along the Niagara Escarpment. Trees
Unlimited in co-operation with NPC staff have been implementing
a forest pest control program since the fall of 1999.

Trees Unlimited delivered their forest management activities on
the 35 acre woodlot at the Woodstock Research Station. Sawlog
and firewood harvests have been completed using Trees
Unlimited’s tree marking, marketing & monitoring services.
More than 18 university staff have been trained for
chainsaw use and felling under the provincial certification
program.
